GENERAL INFORMATION for
Prospective and Current Students
TYPE OF TRAINING OFFERED:
- New Driver Program: We provide the program
required by the State of Ohio, which
includes 24 hours of classroom instruction
and 8 hours of Behind-the-Wheel Training.
All of our BTW instructors are current or
retired police officers or firefighters
trained in emergency vehicle operation. Our
primary classroom instructor is a certified
teacher with advanced training in commercial
vehicles. Within the 8 hours of BTW
required by the State, we incorporate
additional training not required by the
State and not offered by other driving
schools in this area: Off-road
recovery, braking exercises, and evasive
maneuvering.
RULES FOR MINORS (under 18):
- TOTAL COST - $460.00 (Sales tax is not applicable)
- Pre-registration is required to hold spot in session; upon receipt of $60.00 and registration form, place in
session is held. This can be paid by cash, check or credit (Mastercard, Visa,
Discover).
- Remaining balance is due on day of first
class.
- SESSIONS: Currently offered
are the 2-week session which is four weekdays, 7:00 -9:00 p.m. and each Sat, 10:00 a.m
.- 2:15 p.m. (Sat classes have a 15 min. break in-between). The
3-week afternoon
session run Monday-Thursday 4:30p.m. - 6:30 p.m. The
3-week evening session run Monday-Thursday
7:00-9:00 p.m.
Summer a.m. classes are also offered. Classes missed in student’s initial
session can be made up in a future session up through
the six-month expiration date.
- BTW: Training provided in four, 2-hour lessons.
BTW must also be completed by the six-month expiration date.
The same instructor provides all four lessons barring extenuating circumstances on the part of the student or instructor. All behind-the-wheel training is one-on-one.
All BTW training begins at and ends at PDS office. Instructors can agree to other terms individually, but this is never guaranteed.
- WHEN BTW BEGINS: As an ESTIMATE ONLY, BTW typically
begins the week after student’s initial classroom session
ends. Exact timing cannot be provided because BTW is very individualized between the BTW instructor and the student/family.
BTW lessons are schedule one per week. Eligibility: Student is eligible for BTW after completing 4 classes,
showing they hold a valid temporary permit and the student’s account is paid-in-full. At that point, an instructor is assigned to the student; the instructor has up to seven days to contact the student to set up a schedule for BTW. The instructor gives each student a direct contact number to reach the instructor for any BTW related questions and concerns.
- FINAL REGISTRATION: Student must be accompanied by at
least one parent/legal guardian, before class
start date, to complete final registration requirements; final payment is also taken at this time.
- SIX MONTH DEADLINE: State rule. Entire 32-
hour program must be completed within six months of first class
taken. If not completed within this deadline, entire
state-mandated program must be repurchased and taken over.
- COMBINING SCHOOLS NOT ALLOWED:
State rule. Students cannot begin at
one school and finish at another. Entire
program must be completed at one
state-licensed school.
- CERTIFICATE: State rule. Upon completion of program, a State of Ohio-Department of Public Safety certificate is issued to the student within 10 days of completion of the program. This certificate MUST be presented to the OHIO BMV
exam station to be able to take the driver’s exam. If
certificate is lost or destroyed, an affidavit must be completed
by the student or parent and submitted to the driving school.
A replacement will be issued at a charge of $10. Do not schedule your exam until you receive your certificate.
- IF A STUDENT TURNS 18 BEFORE COMPLETING THE COURSE,
adult rules apply. We still supply them with a certificate.

ADULT STUDENTS (18 and over):
- NEW DRIVER PROGRAM: Adult students can take all or any portion of the new driver program, but are not bound by any of the requirements under state law except the temporary license requirements. If they sign up for the entire driver program, PDS requires the student to complete the program
within six-months of the start date.
- We can charge a prorated fee for any adult taking a portion of the new driver program (i.e.: classes only). Price determined by training manager.
- Customized BTW: PDS students
or anyone with an Ohio driver's license can purchase completely
customized BTW training at the rate of $60.00 per hour, with a
2-hour minimum per training session. Payable in advance.
- We will provide a customized “Certificate of Completion” for whatever training has been provided to any
student, upon request.
TRAINING WE DO NOT CURRENTLY PROVIDE:
- Disabled BTW training requiring special equipment (i.e.: hand controls)
- Adult 8-Hour Remedial Course
- Commercial Driver’s License Course
MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS:
- Can parents sit in for class and BTW? Parents are always welcome to sit in a classroom sessions (space permitting…). Parents are permitted to ride
along during the BTW lessons. Please make prior arrangements with the instructor.
Parents must follow all directions and cannot talk during the lesson unless specifically asked by the instructor. If the instructor finds the parent to be a distraction, he/she can ask the parent to remove them self from the lesson..
- Can a PDS car be used to take the driver’s test? Yes, charged $60 per hour with two-hour minimum, prorated per half hour after 2 hours.
An instructor must go with you and time charged begins when PDS car leaves the school and ends when car returns to school. Payment of $120.00 is due before service is provided, any additional balance is required at the end of the session.
- Do you give discounts to siblings? Yes. If both begin in the same
session, the second sibling will receive a $25.00 discount.
Temporary Permit Information :
State course is required for all
students under the age of 18
- Temp permit must be purchased from an exam station.
- Temporary Permit id must be in possession whenever you drive
- Temporary permit expires in one year
(if permit expires student must purchase
new permit and must retake test)
- Student must hold temporary permit for 6 months prior to
taking Driver's License Test.
- Lost temporary permit - Student must purchase new permit (they do not have to retake test)

TO TAKE TEMP PERMIT TEST :
- Cost is $22 for Temp Permit
- No appointment needed
- Legal Guardian must go (have 2 forms of identification or an
Ohio Drivers License)
- Student needs to take birth certificate and social security
card.
